Lesson Plans Dec 14-23 “A Christmas Carol”

scrooge3 Homework- Read AR Book for 30 minutes each night. Take 3 AR tests per marking period – we are in week 2.  All students must take three AR tests by Jan 15, 2010.

Essential Questions  – What tools do poets use to convey meaning and emotion? How does the setting affect the mood and tone of a story? How does a theme  and conflict support the plot of a story?

This week: reading and listening to Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol”.

Monday – Report cards given out

Challenge Day. Special lesson on Gingers for those in class.

Tuesday

  • Test reviewed for “Hitchhiker” Makeups.
  • “A Christmas Carol” Character map, setting map- discussed and filled in
  • Reading and listening to the text.
  • Themes (done with symbols and words)  bells, chains, candle, fire, door, door knocker, ghosts, “Humbug”, dancing, broken heart

Wednesday

  • “A Christmas Carol” review of concept, setting maps.  Introduced the conflict map. Discussion about the three kinds of conflict.
  • Reading and listening to the text.
  • New themes, adding to the setting and character maps.

Thursday

  • “A Christmas Carol”  review conflict, setting and character maps.
  • Read and listen to the text
  • Discuss the conflict, story line and add to the character and setting maps.

Friday

  • A Christmas Carol”  review conflict, setting and character maps.
  • Read and listen to the text
  • Discuss the conflict, story line and add to the character and setting maps.
  • Review questions for the test

Monday, Dec 21

  • “Our Gift” song and sign.
  • Review of Christmas Carol.
  • Test

Tuesday, Dec 22

  • Poem, “Twas the Night Before Christmas” history
  • Choral reading
  • Rewrite this using modern ideas

Wednesday, Dec 23

  • Santa Naughty and Nice list
  • Santa shuffle
  • Sharing stories and treats
  • Holiday homework: READ!

Social Studies

This is week 4 of this nine week class.

Essential Questions: How can we locate places on a map? What is the purpose? How do we use an atlas?

Homework: Watch and read world news. On Tuesdays and Thursdays be prepared to write about your news story. Due Monday, create a map of your neighborhood. Include streets, interesting topographical features such as trees and ponds, and anything else that makes your map interesting.

  • NEWS REPORT: Watch CNN clip about glacier melting
  • Student Atlas – creating 7 maps showing:
  1. World Continent Map – label the continents and oceans
  2. World Climate – color in the different zones: tropical, dry, warm temperate, cool temperate, polar and subartic, highland
  3. Political – label as best you can the countries, color
  4. Eastern Hemisphere- label countries
  5. Northern Hemisphere- color continents
  6. Southern Hemisphere – color continents
  7. Americas – color and label continents
  8. America Physical – color and label

Friday

  • Continents of the World – movie and activity

Monday

  • Test on Continents and maps

Tuesday

  • South and north pole movie and activity
